Deprivation of Freedom, Deprivation of Dignity? Understanding
Incarceration Violence
Abstract
This article examines male inmates’ experiences and narratives on
violence in prison confinement, namely in its discriminatory, physical,
and psychological dimensions and impacts. Departing from the idea
deprivation of freedom-deprivation of dignity, the article explore how
inmates are simultaneously agents and subjects of violence, the way they
evaluate and understand their crimes and their victims, and lastly, how
prison fails to secure and maintain fundamental rights.
