Abstract

This paper focuses on three approaches to the study of semantic change from the first half of the 20th century. This was a period when diachronic linguistic study was giving way to synchronic linguistics under the influence of Structuralist approaches. The scholars in focus in this paper are Antoine Meillet, Gustaf Stern, and Stephen Ullmann.
