The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is considering implementation of a balanced mix design method (BMD) for asphalt concrete (AC) of airfield pavements in a future specification update. One of the key elements towards implementing BMD, is setting adequate conditions for laboratory mechanical testing that best simulate actual field conditions. In this study, representative air void (AV) levels were identified for laboratory mechanical testing by analyzing quality control (QC) data of plant-mixed laboratory-compacted (PMLC) samples along with in-place density measurements for multiple existing airfield pavements. The laboratory compaction effort in the Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) required to reach the recommended AV levels were evaluated for different specimen heights. The specimen height and AV level were then experimentally verified with the Ideal Rutting test (ASTM D8360-22) for these airfield mixtures. Based on analysis of field density, laboratory compaction effort, and mechanical test data, it was recommended to test 62 mm thick gyratory specimens at 7±0.5% AV (directly molded) or at 5±0.5% AV (after cutting), which should help capture the different aspects of the asphalt mixture’s resistance to rutting in terms of aggregate skeleton and binder properties.

While infrastructure planning guidelines frequently emphasise the need of comprehensible, easy to use or unambiguously understandable infrastructure, they lack information on how to design such intuitively usable cycling infrastructure. Furthermore, while cyclists already criticise the current traffic system not to be intuitively usable, this issue will be even more relevant as cycling usage may increase in the next years. Thus, this paper presents a systematic literature review to identify studies that already investigated the intuitiveness of cycling infrastructure. Furthermore, this study aims to identify major research gaps. Searching three databases with a predefined set of keywords resulted in more than 1300 titles. Applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, eleven titles remained in the last review step and were analysed in detail. Results show that these studies use a variety of methods and terms to describe and investigate intuitiveness of various cycling infrastructure designs. Conclusions from these studies range from very specific infrastructure design recommendations over highly general design advices to recommendations that do not refer to infrastructure design at all. Three main research gaps were identified. Firstly, there are various infrastructure types that have not been covered by the studies. Furthermore, there is a need for basic research on how to apply principles of intuitive design to cycling infrastructure design in general. Lastly, a large amount of research investigated behavioural responses to infrastructural changes but was not designed to specifically assess intuitiveness. Thus, there are large research gaps to be filled by upcoming studies to design intuitively usable cycling infrastructure.

Bike-sharing systems allow occasional and regular users to move by replacing other transport modes for the same trip or generating a new journey. Our research assesses the demand for Lisbon’s public dock-based bike-sharing system (BSS) users named after GIRA. This paper aims to identify the determinant factors that influence the potential of the BSS to generate new trips or replace previous modes using a binary logit model based on a survey of 3112 BSS users. The survey results indicate that GIRA generated approximately 20% of the BSS trips, i.e., they would not have been realized if GIRA did not exist. The remaining BSS trips replaced other motorized (55%) and non-motorized (25%) trips. The main determinants explaining a higher likelihood of replacing other modes are having a yearly GIRA pass and a bike-sharing station within a 5-min walking distance. In contrast, regular car users are more likely to generate new trips, suggesting they use bike-sharing for recreational purposes. The findings provide policymakers with an assessment of the determinants that can influence bike-sharing users to generate or substitute trips from other modes for bike-sharing and, consequently, give policies to potentially increase bike-sharing mobility share.

Air traffic controllers play a vital function with regard to ensuring the safety and efficiency of international civil aviation. Despite this, there is a lack of research addressing how air traffic controllers are trained. This paper collects opinions about the air traffic control (ATC) training programme in Singapore from a group of 30 instructors who were working within the aerodrome training team. Convenience sampling was used to recruit the participants and thematic analysis was used to identify key opinions. Significant advantages and disadvantages of the current training programme were identified, such as pre-training and simulator constraints. In addition to findings relating to the learning of required skill sets, interviews also highlighted the need for a just culture in the workplace and human factors training.
